4 Simple Ways to Avoid Needing Professional Drain Cleaning

We all have drains in our home. Yet, we tend to take them for granted. You run the sink, bath, or shower and you expect your drain to take the water away. All of a sudden, it’s not doing its job. The water is just sitting there. Now, what?

If your drain is clogged, chances are good you’ve been making a few mistakes. It’s okay! It’s time to look at ways to keep a clogged drain from happening. Then, you won’t need professional drain cleaning!

#1 Put a wire screen over your drains. Stop the clog before it ever occurs! This is one of the simplest, yet most effective things you can do to keep your drains clean. Placing mesh screens over all of your kitchen and bathroom drains will help to catch food, hair, and other debris. Check your mesh screen regularly and clear them out so they can continue to stay in good condition.

#2 Don’t use your sink as a garbage can. Just because it can go down the drain doesn’t mean it should go down the drain. Avoid pouring grease, leftover food and excessive amounts of soap in any of your sinks. Even if the garbage disposal can’t take anything and everything. Only put small quantities of foods that are easily broken down and always run the water when using the garbage disposal. Any other drains should be for water and a small amount of soap residue only.

#3 Brush your hair before bathing. The most common culprit of a nasty drain clog is hair. Get loose and about-to-fall-out strands in your brush, instead of down your drain. Brushing your hair before showering means the hair is caught in the brush, rather than going down the drain.

#4 Don’t put pets in the bathtub. It may be cute, but it spells disaster for your drain! The risk of washing pet hair down the drain is simply too great. Your drain wasn’t made to be able to handle all of that fur. If you give your dog baths in your bathtub, you’ll have a major clog on your hands sooner rather than later.

Now you know! If you follow these four helpful pieces of advice, your drains will thank you!

Of course, these tips may help you for next time but what about right now? Your drain is a mess! If you need help with a clogged drain and can’t clear it on your own, don’t stress.
